Beyond the numbers: the work behind SSH4A RP phase 2 results

Uganda sanitation project

The Government of the United Kingdom’s WASH Results Programme emerged in reponse to a UN report that the world's progress in meeting the sanitation MDG target was severely off track. To deliver to the ambition of enabling first-time access to water, sanitation, and hygiene for millions of people, three INGOs were selected for the task: SNV (Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for All Programme), Oxfam GB (leading the SWIFT consortium), and Plan UK (leading the South Asia WASH Results Programme).

With the emergence of the Sustainable Development Goals and the SDGs’ strengthened emphasis on sustainability and leaving no one behind, a programme extension for all three INGOs (phase 2) was granted.

WASH Results Programme government funding for phases 1 and 2 applied a Payment by Results modality. This meant that INGOs would receive payment only if they met their stated targets. Though the risks were high, SNV’s proven track record in carrying out successful sanitation and hygiene programmes in rural areas and its long-term presence in implementation countries made it possible for SNV to meet its targets, and in some countries, over-exceed these.

Learn about the type of SNV work that went into achieving SSH4A RP phase 2 results, per country. And the lessons that we’re taking along with us to realise Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for All.
