The project targets Kamphambe Primary School in Katete district. Using the Home-Grown School Feeding (HGSF) programme of the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) as the entry point, SNV's model school pilot project showcases techniques that help improve nutrition and dietary diversity by using locally grown produce, develop income earning opportunities and encourage environmental protection. The project has the following components:

  • Community organisation and project management;

  • Garden etsablishment including hands-on training for teachers, pupils and community: planning, preparation, sowing and transplanting, harvest and post-harvest storage, processing and consumption;

  • Bio-digester construction, priming and commissioning;

  • Business management and entrepreneurship training for the School Garden Management Team;

  • Promotion and advocacy to build awareness of the possibilities of HGSF using school gardens.
