Hygiene in agricultural value chains
Exploring ways to integrate environmental hygiene considerations and standards along nodes of the agricultural value chain.
Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical role that environmental hygiene plays in preventing disease transmission. Whilst markets are considered potential hotspots for transmission, few interrogate environmental hygiene in actual food production and supply. Often occurring in poor and unregulated settings with low infrastructure endowments, appropriate investments in hygiene considerations are needed urgently.
This report is SNV's first attempt to unpack key elements, approaches, and principles of hygiene integration in agricultural value chains (AVCs). It offers insights into how to engage with AVC stakeholders, as well as methods for planning interventions to strengthen environmental hygiene services, regulations, and behaviours - through an incentives-based approach.
