  • Abstract

This report distils evidence from the Piloting Electric Pressure Cookers in Kalobeyei project, led by SNV and CLASP under EnDev’s Innovation Window in 2021–2022. It explores demand, payment models and user experience for EPCs among refugee and host communities connected to solar mini‑grids in Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement (KIS) and nearby Kakuma, Kenya.

Users cooked about twice per day and reported shorter active cooking time, easier multitasking and reduced smoke exposure. Metered data showed an average of 4 kWh per household per month from EPC use, with higher utilisation after mini‑grid upgrades improved supply reliability. Most users reduced charcoal and firewood purchases, indicating potential monthly fuel savings when electricity is available at affordable tariffs. Payment plans increased access but experienced high defaults, highlighting the need for stronger customer vetting, partnerships with financial institutions and clear after‑sales support.

The report models scale scenarios for 50,000 households and outlines a practical roadmap for market development, including product selection, user training, credit design and smart subsidies for vulnerable groups. This resource suits donors, implementers, distributors and mini‑grid operators seeking to build inclusive, commercially viable e‑cooking markets in displacement and low‑income contexts.
