Making biodigesters more affordable in Uganda
This policy brief examines the challenge of rising upfront costs for domestic biodigester installation among smallholder farmers in Uganda.
Abstract
The uptake of domestic biodigesters in Uganda is declining as rising installation costs make them less affordable for smallholder farmers. This threatens the adoption of a technology that delivers clean energy, climate and agricultural benefits. Reversing this trend will require targeted policy and regulatory reforms that improve affordability and create an enabling environment for installation and maintenance. AS explored in this policy brief, a coordinated approach across government, led by the Ministries of Energy and Mineral Development, Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Finance, Planning and Economic Development, and the Office of the Prime Minister, will be essential to scaling biodigester adoption and maximising its development impact.
