SNV has been working in Ghana since 1992 and currently has offices in Accra, Tamale and Nandom, while working directly and through local partners within the sixteen (16) regions of Ghana. Presently, SNV Ghana is implementing a Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Nutrition in the Upper West Region of Ghana, precisely in the Nandom and Lambussie Districts. With funding from the Helmsley Charitable Trust, the Healthy Future for All (HF4A) project aims at improving the quality of life for all and specifically increase the number of children under 15 years growing up in a hygienic environment at home and in school. The project focuses on creating demand for sustainable WASH infrastructure, change in behaviour on the usage of these facilities, support the private sector to improve on sanitation markets through creating of an enabling environment for them to operate in whilst also ensuring the functionality of these facilities. 

We currently seeking applicants for a full-time position for a WASH (Sanitation) Advisor. The position is based in Nandom, Ghana.​​​​​

 

 

Job Description

The WASH Advisor is responsible for identifying appropriate market-based approaches and supply-side activities to support sanitation services. S/he leads efforts in local enterprise development, quality improvement, and innovative outreach mechanisms related to local markets, paying particular focus to vulnerable groups, with the objective of strengthening capacity for steering and implementation of WASH demand creation. In addition, her/his role is to influence both personal and domestic sanitation and hygiene practices through behavioural change communication delivered by existing community structures, schools or other structures with the appropriate outreach.

The WASH Advisor (Sanitation) will work closely with the wider team responsible for the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene demand creation and follow-up component to ensure there is adequate supply of latrine products and services in the local market to support sanitation demand creation activities as well as work closely with the Behavioural Change Communication specialist to ensure coherence between demand creation messages and the hygiene promotion messages. He/she will support the integration of hygiene aspects in follow-up activities (after demand creation) and ensure that hygiene is fully integrated into the district sanitation plans and monitoring as well as business training and development.

Responsibilities

  • Strengthen the supply chain with Key Actors
  1. Develop a robust WASH supply chain plan for a peri-urban settings and serve as main focal person for activities related to sanitation marketing strategy development, coordination of trainings and stakeholders.
  2. Set up of a sustainable sanitation markets strategy to improve facility access and functionality and strong linkage to social behaviour change
  3. Work closely with identified Government institutions for the development of business plans for SMEs to ensure WASH service delivery
  4. Development of financial models for these SMEs in Water and Sanitation
  • Coordinate functionality of WASH products
  1. Support in the financial aspects of operation and Maintenance (O&M) of all WASH facilities.
  2. Prepare progress reports on weekly, monthly and quarterly bases and keep progress records especially on functionality of products.
  3. Conduct base line inventory survey at the districts.
  4. Prepare monitoring and evaluation plan for the WASH facilities.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a field related such as water, sanitation and hygiene.
  • Minimum 3 years of proven track record in WASH, especially sanitation (rural and small towns) working for international organizations in a supply chain and behaviour change communication Advisory capacity; understanding of the Ghanaian context would be an advantage.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the WASH sector, particularly sanitation marketing approaches and messaging related to sanitation and hygiene; and working knowledge in coaching entrepreneurial skills.
  • Professional work experience in programme management function or a technical expert capacity in sanitation and marketing.
  • Proven experience in community-based sanitation and sanitation marketing (or business development), technology and practices in WASH in schools and Healthcare facilities, will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge and experience with market-based approaches in WASH, and sanitation as a business.
  • Knowledge and skills in project planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation (M&E).
