SNV at COP29

Applying climate finance for local impact.

COP29 logo

As the world gears up for COP29, SNV is poised to lend its voice to this crucial global event. Scheduled for 11 to 22 November 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan, COP29 will bring together world leaders, climate experts, and stakeholders to address the pressing challenges of climate change. This year's theme, 'Enhance Ambition and Enable Action,' underscores the urgent need for substantial climate finance to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect vulnerable communities.

SNV's priorities at COP29

With local climate action as our central goal at COP29, we will focus on several key priorities:

  • Climate finance: Calling for innovative financial instruments and mechanisms to unlock and scale investments that mitigate the higher risks involved in climate action.

  • Systems transformation for climate action: Building systems that mitigate and help adapt to the climate crisis by maximising synergies across sectors through locally-led and inclusive approaches.

  • Addressing fragility: Supporting communities exposed to different forms of fragility exacerbated by climate change risks, promoting sustainable practices, and improving food, water, and energy security.

Session title: Deploying innovative financing instruments for resilient food systems

As Official Development Assistance (ODA) faces constraints due to tight public budgets, financial innovation is critical. There is strong global commitment to scale up climate finance through green finance initiatives among financial actors - including banks, national institutions, insurers, and regulators - to mobilise private-sector finance. Strengthening climate resilience requires innovative financing mechanisms that optimise borrowing costs and broaden financial access to vulnerable communities.

This session will explore the opportunities and challenges of deploying innovative financial instruments to enhance food security and resilience in a changing climate.

Session title: Financing resilient futures for smallholder farmers

The global food system is responsible for a third of greenhouse gas emissions, and it is impacted heavily by climate change. A rapid transition to a resilient and low-emission food system is essential for feeding the world into the future and reaching the Paris goals. This requires large-scale financing, and careful attention for trade-offs with nutrition, biodiversity, water, health and poverty reduction.

This session will focus on:

  • The food systems transformation challenge, and how this relates to smallholder farmers.

  • What needs to be done to get from good examples to change at a global scale.
