DFCD supports pickle production using local agricultural products in Nepal
Approved proposal to support women-led Nepali Mann Udyog Ltd in expanding its pickle production facility.
Should DFCD's support for Nepali Mann Udyog Ltd prove successful, this women-led initiative in Nepal could improve local food security and provide a sustainable model for the innovative use of agricultural products.
The Nepal Aggregator Origination Facility Investment Committee has approved a proposal to support Nepali Mann Udyog Ltd in expanding its production facility for pickles and other local products.
This investment proposal development will enable Nepali Mann Udyog Ltd to secure commercial financing from NMB Bank (Nepal Aggregator partner bank of FMO). The funding aims to increase the production capacity, enhance product quality, and expand market reach both locally and internationally.
In light of the foregoing, SNV Nepal intends to sign a EUR 69,000 grant funding agreement with Nepali Mann Udyog Ltd to support the final development of the investment proposal and a technical assistance package.
The technical assistance package will support the company in 3 specific areas:
Modern business management integration:
Nepali Mann Udyog Ltd, a traditionally operated small company, seeks technical support from DFCD to adopt modern business management processes, including financial management, logistics, marketing, and human resource management.
Semi-mechanized production:
The company’s handmade products, crafted by female employees, face challenges in quantity and quality consistency. DFCD will assist in researching, identifying, and testing semi-mechanized equipment to improve production efficiency.
Market expansion and certification:
To broaden its market reach nationally and internationally, the company needs market linkages and quality certifications. DFCD will support the exploration of new markets and the acquisition of necessary quality certifications.
This project is expected to achieve Rio-Marker 1 for food security by minimizing food waste and Rio-Marker 2 scores for promoting diversified agricultural production (local products) to reduce climate risk of small holder famers.
The impact of the origination stage includes:
2,000 small holder farmers (more than 50% women) positively impacted due to assurance of market for their local agricultural products.
Significant reduction of food waste (surplus vegetables/spices) through pickle production
Livelihood enhancement of women (more than 90% employee of company are women)
