Access to clean energy is more than a necessity. It is an enabler that enhances the well-being of refugees and host communities while promoting sustainable development.

SNV, through the Humanitarian Market-Based Energy Access (MBEA) III Project funded by EnDev, is working to champion this mission in Kenya.

The project aims to deliver clean, affordable cooking and lighting solutions to households in Kakuma Refugee Camp, the Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement, and surrounding host communities. By focusing on both supply and demand, the initiative looks to strengthen local energy markets, improves access to renewable energy, and fosters resilient livelihoods for under-served populations

A local entrepreneur demonstrates the solar-powered freezer that enables him to sell cold soft drinks in his shop.

A remarkable outcome so far is the creation of jobs and support for local businesses. By October 2024, the project had enabled over 18,000 people to access clean cooking solutions and improved electricity access for 8,000 more. For the hotel and shop owners in Turkana West, solar-powered solutions have enabled economic growth, with these technologies being leveraged to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and expand services.

Refugees in the camp, like Nelly Mukacha from the Kakuma Village three, now enjoy better living conditions. Meanwhile, businesswomen like Grace and Mary from the Kalobeyei Integrated settlement benefit from improved cooking efficiency, reduced costs, and a better work-life balance.

This case study highlights the potential of clean energy to drive economic and social progress in displaced and host communities. This can only become possible through accessible financing, community collaboration, and user education in ensuring the sustainability of clean energy solutions.
