  • Abstract

This study assesses the prospects for scaling safe, affordable faecal sludge management in Khulna, Kushtia, and Jhenaidah in Bangladesh by examining household willingness to pay, service preferences, tariff options, and provider capacity for vacutug-based (mechanical) emptying. It asserts that mechanical emptying can advance Bangladesh’s national WASH ambitions by improving hygiene, reducing unsafe manual emptying, and strengthening citywide sanitation systems, directly supporting SDG 6 on safely managed sanitation and related health and environmental goals. It concludes by offering some insights into key next steps to take the service to scale, including but not limited to awareness campaigns, staff training, treatment infrastructure, dedicated municipal FSM units, and research on private-sector participation, fleet optimisation, and service access in hard-to-reach areas.
