UNICEF-SNV Partnership Cooperation

Improving student retention and growth and development opportunities through reliable WASH services in schools.

Our WASH in Schools programmes result in improved student retention.

Poor or non-existent water, sanitation & hygiene facilities in schools not only pose a health risk to students, they add to student drop-out rates – especially amongst adolescent girls.

We work national and local authorities to tackle the structural causes behind the non-sustainability of WASH services in schools and promote improved awareness of sanitation and hygiene amongst pupils.

Our WASH in Schools programmes result in improved student retention, while empowering students to take positive sanitation and hygiene messages home, improving household health and driving change in their local communities.

Across Sub-Saharan Africa, SNV and UNICEF have numerous partnership-based programmes within the Water & Sanitation sector.

In recent years, the development of the cooperation between UNICEF and SNV in Africa has progressed particularly in terms of geographic coverage (number of countries; outreach per country). SNV has been especially active in the capacity development components of UNICEF WASH programmes, with specialist input including engaging meso-level partners for scaling up, involvement of private sector stakeholders and maintenance and supply of hardware and hygiene products.
